This category encompasses documentaries and video materials about the wide spectrum of activities that are today recognized and considered to be a form of activism. To understand what this category contains in terms of the content of the video materials, one must be able to properly interpret the term activism. Let us help you with that by giving you the definition of the above mentioned term.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, activism is a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue. The core of activism, a broad term such as it is, perhaps is best explained using examples of the manner in which it is conducted. The purpose of this category is to provide, as many as possible, video materials for the viewers` utter content.
Before we provide examples of activism, it is also important to emphasize that activism is not necessarily defined as good or bad. There is a fine line dividing the two. The beliefs of an individual or a group, engaged in a certain form of activism, is what determines the prefix along with the selected methods used to achieve certain goals. The means of achieving a certain goal of an activist group or individuals among others are: civil disobedience, protest, demonstration and direct action (all of the above can have a prefix of “violent”). With the advance of technology and media, various new forms of activism emerged such as media/ internet activism and the so called hacktivism.
The wide area of documentary coverage in this category goes from the violent action against the participants of the gay parade that took place in Belgrade, Serbia in 2010, to the infamous “Bloody Sunday” a conflict between protesters and the British military that happened in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1972, followed by the story of near death experiences of two women from Ghana, Africa, who suffered greatly during childbirth due to the health care issues.
These are some of the stories of people joining forces in order to make changes in the world. Times and social occurrences are ever changing, often taking a turn for the worse. In those times of need, the activists are the driving force behind the oncoming tide of change. As in every story, there is also the other side of the story, a dark side, where activists achieve their goals using violence, reaping terror and mayhem on their path.
Explore the different aspects of activism; watch the inspiring stories of the activists on their path of defending their beliefs, and also those frightening tales of the dark side of activism, where violence and mayhem are a way of life.
