Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, is a number of conditions that occur due to the infection with human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. This virus is transmitted by having unprotected sexual intercourse, anal and oral sex included, or by blood transfusions.
Other means of getting infected include hypodermic needles, breastfeeding and passing on from the mother to the child during pregnancy.
This documentary is looking into the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, along with the contribution in the fields of medical research, treatment and law regulations by the organizations such as ACT UP and TAG.
The director of this documentary is a journalist, David France, who was involved with AIDS from the outburst and onward. This film was his debut and it is dedicated to his late partner who tragically passed in 1992 due to AIDS and pneumonia.
The materials used in the making of this documentary include over 700 hours of video materials, news reports and a number of filmed protests, conferences and meetings of the member of ACT UP. The documentary was released on September 21st, 2012 in a number of theatres in the US.
