The most sophisticated warship ever built, equipped with devastating firepower, the USS Nimitz is the pride of the American navy.
The supercarrier is in a class of its own, being the largest warship in the world. Named after Chester W. Nimitz, a fleet commander during World War II, the warship underwent a redesign in 1975 to be a nuclear-powered multimission aircraft carrier.
The carrier has changed several locations so far, and since 2015, the ship is positioned in the Naval Base Kitsap. In 2012, the Nimitz became the oldest American carrier in active service.
Nimitz serves as a flagship of a strike group that can take down a country in a matter of hours. The cost of the building is estimated around $1 billion. Launched in 1972, Nimitz, as with other carriers, has a lifespan of 50 years. Estimates are that the Nimitz will be replaced sometime between 2022 and 2025.
The Nimitz travels with speed of 31.5 knots, and has unlimited range.
