The Aokigahara forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. People started taking their own lives in the forest after the novel Kuroi Jukai was published. In the book, a young lover commits suicide in the forest.

The name of the forest translates to Sea of Trees in English. Located in the northwestern flank of Japan’s Mount Fuji, thriving on 12 square miles.

The site holds so many bodies, that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. Authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis. The reason is simple, the forest sits at the base of Mount Fuji, and is too dense to patrol frequently.

Yes, you can visit the fores.t There are three types of visitors to the forest. Those are trekkers interested in scenic vistas, curious hoping for a glimpse of the macabre, and those who do not plan on leaving.

In 2016, Netflix released a movie called The Forest.
