Science of Steroids

Athletes take recourse to various drugs to increase the natural performance of their bodies. While majority of the athletes develop their muscle mass by using standard techniques like lifting weights or running. However, there exist a few athletes who take help of artificial substances. These substances promote the growth of muscles and the expression of male traits teenage boys experience at puberty.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), commonly called steroids, are a derivate of the testosterone male hormone.

Man’s body is designed in a way that it can adapt itself to the harshest of environments. This becomes possible when muscles increase their size over relatively-short periods of time. Working out depends on the same phenomenon. When we undertake an exercise small tears are created inside the muscle fibers. These tears get repaired by the immune system.

When repairing takes place, our body also compensates for the damage, and adds more material to the muscles than that got ripped. If this process is undertaken repeatedly then the muscle mass visibly grows, to the point where it becomes noticeable. In case of constant recurrence exact muscular mass gets developed.

Steroids promote this kind of growth but artificially. They travel via the blood stream to the cells. They hook up to small portions of the cells known as androgen receptors. From there they pick up the molecules and carry them inside muscle cells. At that point, DNA is combined and proteins of a specific kind are released. The use of steroids only leads to dire consequences.

Steroids help in accelerating cell and muscle growth. Being an artificial process, the body is not always equipped to handle such massive and rapid changes. Therefore there are side effects in most cases.

The film makes a point against the use of drugs to improve muscle mass. As per the claims made by the film, instead of picking up steroid spending some time in the gym each week would produce similar results.
