Cartel Land is an award winning documentary by director Matthe Heineman. Matthew got the idea after reading an article in the Rolling Stone magazine about the Arizona Border Recon. His father then sent him an article about Jose Manuel Mireles and the idea was born.
Matthew wanted to do a story about vigilantes on both sides of the border. He wanted to show people what happens when citizens feel they need to take action and the law in their own hands, and when the government and its institutions fail.
The documentary won the Best Director and Special Jury Award for Cinematography in the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary tells the story of cartel businesses and criminals in Mexico, and how they take violence out of control.
