Why Are Airports So Busy? | Heathrow: Britain's Busiest Airport

If you have ever been to a big airport, you’ve noticed the abundance of people there. Some airports are just busier than others, and there are many factors behind that. For starters, number of airport lines, but also location. One of the reasons why Kemal Ataturk in Istanbul is so busy is because it represents a bridge between Europe and Asia.

London’s Heathrow, however, is the busiest airport in Europe, and the seventh in the world. Taking into account it is just one of the six international airports serving the London region, Heathrow might be even busier if there were less airports.

In 2018, Heathrow serviced more than 80 million passengers, 480,339 aircraft movements, and all thanks to the army of 76,000 staff members.

This documentary was filmed over nine months, and follows the staff at Heathrow, from baggage handlers to air traffic controllers. Take a look at what happens on a daily basis, as the staff tries to process more than 200,000 passengers per day.
