The documentary film, the Business of Being Born produced by Ricki Lake discusses the different experiences faced by women during child birth in US. The documentary talks about the various methods of childbirth.

The film depicts the life of a midwife Cara and the risk and responsibilities that her work entails. The film offers a serious critique of the prevalent health care system in US which regards childbirth as medical emergency, instead of treating it as a natural phenomenon. The film makes a strong case against the current methods and problems faced during childbirth by presenting statistics that highlight the neglect of the US healthcare system.

The film shows that amongst all the developed nation US has one of the highest death rate for new born babies. As part of a more realistic glimpse into the current state of childbirth, experts are questioned and different reasons emerge, like the extensive use of procedures as a method to save time, explaining the dismal statistic of a high death rate amongst newborns in US.
