AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is a chronic, and potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. The condition damages the immune system, interfering with the body’s ability to fight the organisms that cause the disease.
HIV is a sexually transmitted infection. Back in the early 1980s, we had little to no understanding to HIV and AIDS. Nowadays, we have a better understanding of the condition. But we are still ways back in finding a human treatment and cure for AIDS.
According to statistics, in 2018 there were 37.9 million people across the globe infected with AIDS. Out of those 1.7 million were children younger than 15 years old. Every year, approximately 1.7 million individuals get infected with HIV.
