Marco Polo was an Italian merchant, explorer, and writer. He traveled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. He traveled with his family, but also a crew. During his trip, he stayed in China for 17 years.
He was one of the first and most famous Europeans to travel to Asia during the Middle Ages. And he traveled farther than any of his predecessors. He reached both China and Mongolia, and became a confidant of Kublai Khan.
He is best known for being the first European to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience in China. He was not the first one to travel there. But he did leave everything people needed to explore China.
