Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore. The city is famous all because of the disaster that struck in 79 CE when a nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted, and covered the city in 19 feet of ash and other volcanic debris.
The ruins were discovered late in the 16th century. This documentary allows you to explore the cutting-edge science and sophisticated Hollywood production techniques featured in the landmark special Pompeii: Disaster Street.
For the first time in 70 years, archaeologists have uncovered new areas of ancient Pompeii. With exclusive access to the dig, see how the latest artifacts and DNA science are changing history and discover the real stories of what happened to the unfortunate souls who didn’t escape the city gates.
