In 1969, the city of Derinkuyu was opened for tourists. Before opening for tourists, officials in Turkey made sure to fully explore the underground city, for which they believe was part of an underground civilization living there more than 5,000 years ago.
The city is located in Cappadocia, an area known for its caves and subterranean safety locations. According to some estimates, there are more than 250 subterranean safe havens in Cappadocia, all carved from pliable volcanic ash rock, which scientists call “tuff”.
The city of Derinkuyu, for example, is located 200 feet under the ground, and can accommodate up to 20,000 people. And all of that with livestock and food stores. The city is just one of the underground complexes found in Turkey, but the largest underground city.
Some of the interesting features of the city include a complex located on the second floor, with a barrel vaulted ceiling. Some scientists believe this room was used for religious studies.
Be as it is, Derinkuyu is an object of many controversies. Some believe the claim that it was built by extraterrestrials is nothing but BS. No matter what you believe, the fact of the matter is that the city is located underground.
