The hijab has been a subject of controversy in the past few years. We’ve seen countries banning women from wearing hijab. And then we had Nike create a special sports hijab.

The common belief is that Muslim women are required by their faith to wear the hijab. But what the term “hijab” actually means? The common misconception is that the hijab is the Muslim women’s veil.

Samina Ali, an award winning author and novelist talks in length about the hijab during her TED talk. She explains what the term really means, and takes people on a journey back to Prophet Muhammad’s time.

What are the fundamentals linked with the hijab? She believes in personal narrative as a force for achieving women’s individual and political freedom. And she uses the social media to share her ideas.
