Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
According to many estimates, he produced more than 900 paintings and many more drawings and sketches.
Besides creating artworks, he also wrote almost as many letters and postcards. Some of them included first sketches of some of his masterpieces.
His style is unique and almost impossible to copy. Many consider him one of the greatest painters to have ever lived. And yet, he died poor because he couldn’t sell many of his paintings. One of the reasons he made self-portraits is he couldn’t afford to pay for a model.
