Pete Edward Rose is one of the best baseball players. He is known by his nickname “Charlie Hustle”. He played in the Major League from 1963 to 1983, and managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1984 to 1989.
He is the all-time MLB leader in hits, games played, at-bats, singles, and outs. He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one MVP award, two Gold Gloves, and the Rookie of the Year Award. During his career, he made 17 All-Star appearances.
Sadly, his legacy is more his betting than his playing. He is one of the best players to play the game, but also one of the worst in terms of legacy. In August 1989, he was penalized with permanent ineligibility from basketball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing and managing the Reds.
In 2004, he finally admitted that he bet on baseball and on the Reds. That was after years of public denial. His possible reinstatement and election the Hall of Fame remains contentious.
