As a character actor, he usually performed female roles in cinematic and theatrical productions. He adopted a female drag persona for his music career.
Divine was one of the early popular drag queens. He developed his interest in drag while working as a woman’s hairdresser. By the mid-1960s, he had embraced the countercultural scene in Maryland and befriended Waters. It was John Waters who gave him the name Divine and the tagline of “the most beautiful woman in the world, almost”.
