The Fake Van Gogh's Timeline

Sunflowers is the name of two series of still life paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The first series, executed in Paris in 1887, depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set, made a year later in Arles, shows a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase.
For the Dutch artist, sunflowers had a special meaning and significance. They communicated gratitude. Van Gogh hung the first two of the paintings in the room of his friend, painter Paul Gauguin, who came to live with the author for a while in the Yellow House.
The sunflowers series is one of the most famous paintings in art history. And they are also some of the most expensive ones. They were sold for $39.85 million to an anonymous buyer, a big increase from the price Van Gogh once expected, just $125.
This documentary explores the authenticity of the Sunflowers painting by Vincent van Gogh, bought in the late 1980s for a then record sum by a Japanese insurance company. In 2002, the painting went on public exhibition alongside an undisputedly genuine version of Sunflowers, raising once again the questions so vividly posed in this film.
