The Chinese Are Coming

Traveling through three continents, Justin Rowlatt investigates the spread of Chinese influence around the globe and asks what the world be like if China overtakes U.S. as world economic superpower. In the first of two films, he embarks on a journey through South Africa to trace the extraordinary phenomenon of Chinese migration to Africa, and China’s enormous influence in the development of the continent.

While many in West Africa seen as a land of poverty, the Chinese is seen as a business opportunity almost limitless. From Angola to Tanzania, Justin meets Chinese brave entrepreneurs who have traveled thousands of miles to the creation of companies.

Justin Rowlatt across Brazil and the United States on an epic journey as it continues to investigate the spread of Chinese influence around the globe.

In Rio, the local industries, including factories bikini, are threatened by cheap imports from China and the Amazon, Justin witness the phenomenal impact of China’s thirst for resources of indigenous peoples and the environment.

In the U.S., from California to the rust belt, Justin is against the backdrop of growing American anger about its own decline from competition from China.
