Sand Cats may not look the part, but they are built to handle the extremes of one of the harshest environments on Earth.
The sand cat, also known as the sand dune cat, is a small wild cat that inhabits sandy and stony deserts far from water sources. With its sandy to light grey fur, it is well camouflaged in a desert environment. Its head-and-body length ranges from 39–52 cm with a 23–31 cm long tail.
These cats are naturally rare. Their population is thought to be declining due to habitat loss and falling numbers of prey species.
According to some estimates, there are only a bit more than 27,000 mature individuals of the sand cat species.
