During his career, he sold more than 100 million records. The first Three Tenors recording became the best-selling classical album of all time. He was also noted for his charity work on behalf of refugees and the Red Cross.
His ringing and pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era. He died of pancreatic cancer in September 2007 at the age of 71.
