John Mayer was born in 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He started his musical career in 1997, at the age of 20. He started in a two-man live band, but quickly left it. Shortly after, he began playing in local clubs.
His first big hit was appearance at the South by Southwest Festival in 2001, where he showed his skills at full display. He was then signed to Aware Records, and then later to Columbia Records.
