The Enron scandal was a series of events involving dubious accounting practices that resulted in the bankruptcy of the energy, commodities, and services company Enron Corporation and the dissolution of the accounting firm Arthur Andersen.
In this video we take a look at the Enron story. At over $60 billion being scammed away from the public, they were the biggest fraud in history. Yes, even bigger than Theranos.
The scandal drew attention to accounting and corporate fraud, as the shareholders lost $74 billion in the four years leading up to its bankruptcy.
Before that, Enron was one of the fastest-growing and supposedly innovative companies in the United States in the 1990s. But the entire edifice was based on massive accounting and corporate fraud that eventually came to light, resulting in the company declaring bankruptcy in December 2001.
