Dr. J retired 1987 at the age of 37. He spent 11 years in the NBA and 5 in the ABA, finishing with a total of 30,026 points, averaging more than 24 points per game.
During his career, he won 2 ABA titles with the New York Nets and then led the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1983 NBA Championship over the Los Angeles Lakers.
He was and always will be a Philadelphia sports legend.
During his 16 seasons as a player, none of his teams ever missed the postseason. Famous for his slam dunking, he was among the first to do a free-throw line slam dunk in a contest.
Julius Erving remains the only player ever to win Most Valuable Player award in both the ABA and NBA. And he was the one responsible for the term being posterized. It was first coined to describe his moves.
In 1993, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. This is his story.
