Joseph Stalin was a Georgian revolutionary and Soviet politician who led the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s up until his passing on March 5, 1953.
He served as General Secretary of the Communist Party and as Premier. Under his leadership, the Soviet Union was transformed from a peasant society into an industrial and military superpower. However, there is a flip side, and that is that he ruled by terror, and millions of his citizens died during the brutal reign.
He was the second leader of the Soviet Union, right after Lenin. He died at age 74 after suffering a stroke. Stalin rose to become the leader by conducting discreet activities for the Bolshevik Party for twelve years before the Russian Revolution.
Why was he called the man of steel? Well, because he ruled viciously and rigorously. This documentary takes a look at his life and reign.
