Bali, the land of Temples

A popular saying on Bali is that “there are actually more temples than homes”. And that might be true. According to some estimates, Bali is home to more than 10,000 religious compounds.

The temples on Bali are spread over the island, mountains, to hilltops and low-lying coastal areas. The island is usually peaceful and “uninhabited”. Population density on Bali is not something to get excited about. The Indonesian island has a population of just 4.225 million, measured in 2014.

Known for its volcanic mountains, iconic ride paddies, beaches, and coral reefs, Bali is home to many religious sites as well. One of the most popular is the Uluwatu temple.

Bali’s temples transform into scenes of great activity during festivals. During that time, the temples are ornately decorated and you can witness many dance performances. An interesting aspect of festivals is the cockfighting tradition.

Each of Bali’s temples is unique and they either face towards the mountains, the sea, or towards sunrise. This quick and short documentary shows a first person point of view of the temples.
