A Walk Around Chernobyl

We’ve all heard about Chernobyl, mainly about the Chernobyl disaster or accident. It was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on April 25-26 1986 in the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The area was at the time under the Soviet Union, in today’s Ukraine. Nearly 20 years after reactor No.4 exploded, spending few hours near Chernobyl is considered quite safe.

But back in the days, spending a minute there was considered highly unsafe. Radiation was an issue. Today, much of the region has only slightly elevated radiation of about 22 micro-roentgens, as opposed to the usual 14.

Relative hot spots located around the reactor itself pose no risk. Still, people are afraid to go near. But some tourists and adventurers do just that. This adventurer shows you how it looks wandering around Chernobyl.
