There are cities nowadays that existed some thousands of years ago. When you talk about a city, you need to clarify how city is defined. For example, while Jericho is widely regarded the oldest known city at 9000 years old, it wasn’t anything more than a large settlement for several thousand years.

This documentary takes a look at Jericho, as well as other first known cities like Uruk in Summer.

Cities did not just suddenly appear. They are the culmination of civilization and evolution. Cities evolved from attempts at civilization that went before on a smaller scale.

With that in mind, it is always interesting to see how old are some cities. It is astonishing to think that there was life and civilization in certain parts of Earth more than 5,000 thousand years ago.
