Is there a way to convert recyclable material into art? This documentary will provide a heartwarming story of the community of catadores, the people who collect and recycle various materials, turning them into a form of art.
This documentary is directed by Lucy Walker with the help from Karen Harley and Joao Jardim. The executive producer is Fernando Meirelles and photography credit goes to Dudu Miranda. The soundtrack was entirely done by Moby, a close friend and associate of Lucy Walker.
The premiere of the documentary was in 2010 at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Oscar at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. The director, Lucy Walker, received a Best Documentary Award from the International Documentary Association.
The documentary follows Vik Muniz, an artist on his way to Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he will join forces with a group of catadores, lead by Sebastiao Carlos Dos Santos and their art project will eventually lead them to an auction house in London. The profit from the auction and the documentary award money were given to the catadores community in order to improve their lifestyle.
