In 1983, the United States felt the urge to invade a country with a population of fewer than 100,000 citizens. The island of Grenada, located closely to Venezuela, was ruled by a communist government, and the US had to place a pro-Western government in its place.
In just two months, the US managed to overthrow the government, with the conflict beginning in 1979 with the Cold War still in effect.
The Operation “Urgent Fury” was performed by more than 8,000 US troops, who invaded the bays of Grenada. With the support of Jamaica, the US troops managed to beat the resistance in Grenada in just two months.
And while the operation received huge support in the United States of America, with more than 5,000 medals rewarded to soldiers, it was heavily criticized outside of the country. In fact, the United Kingdom and Canada attempted to pass a resolution at the United Nations Security Council which would have condemned the operation as a violation of international law.
