Marines in Afghanistan: The Untold Stories of the 5th Marine Regiment

In August 2011, the 5th Marine Regiment deployed for the first time in Afghanistan, providing support for the Operation Enduring Freedom. Even though it was late in the war, the marines were sent to Afghanistan to try and put an end to it.

And as Captain Ben Middendorf puts it, “marines die in this places, and it puts stress and weight on you”. The documentary shows the time the marines stayed in Afghanistan, and the personal stories of some of the marines: how they prepare, mentally and physically, what are the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Some of the marines deployed in Afghanistan also played a role in the Iraq war, and they try to explain that there is no difference whether they are in Iraq, Afghanistan or any other place. Where there is a war, the marines are there to help.

The Fifth Marine Regiment was formed during the First World War, and ever since has been part of many US missions, including the Second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War. But they did their best after the 9/11 incident, when they started taking part in the Global War on Terrorism.
