"Land of Milk & Honey is a documentary film made by journalist and film maker Russell Cavanagh that celebrates two independent food producers living and working just outside Sheffield, UK. Their unique business brandings have gained eminence in the city. This story illustrates how important many small businesses are in helping bind local communities and in providing a quality alternative to often imported supermarket produce.
The first subject of the documentary film is Sheffield Honey. Proprietor Jez Daughtry talks about why he moved from being a senior IT executive to full time apiarist. As he speaks to the camera, he is working on several of his 250 beehives and explaining how his small but expanding business works. Increasingly popular, jars of Sheffield Honey were ordered for the 2012 London Olympics.
Our Cow Molly Farm provides the second subject of the film. A fairly small dairy business that was nearly one of many casualties in the supermarket price wars raging in 2007, Our Cow Molly decided to diversify into ice cream and such has been their success, they are considered an icon of Sheffield identity. Russell Cavanagh’s camera visits the farm to document the morning routine and goes on the early milk round across the city of Sheffield with OCM’s Eddie Andrew, who reveals why he shunned approaches by supermarkets to stock his produce, preferring instead to concentrate on those small, community businesses who helped him and his family business build up their brand.
