Many famous and classic dishes have been named after people. Some are named after regions of the world

What is in the name? How many times have you had Eggs Benedict, or Beef Stroganoff, or a Sachertorte, and wondering how that dish got its name? Many famous and classic dishes have been named after people. Some are named after regions of the world. So, with that being said, let’s decode the names of some of the most famous dishes in the world.

Schwarzwald cake

German cuisine doesn’t have many original recipes outside of the sausages and traditional meat dishes. However, German desserts are truly work of art, both in taste and look. There are more than 500 original cake recipes in Germany. Most of the main ingredients are chocolate and cream.

The Schwarzwald cake is one of the most famous, and the name represents the mountain area in southwestern Germany. The cake is known as Black Forest cake or “Black Forest cherry-torte” in the English dictionary. And basically, it represents the two main ingredients: chocolate and cherries.

Sachertorte

This is a timeless classic. The legend for the gastro delight comes from the 19th century. A young chef, who was working as an assistant, had to take over for his chef. The young chef jumped at the opportunity to promote himself. He was supposed to prepare something special by the order of the Chancellor, Prince Wenzel von Metternich from Vienna. The dessert was to be served to European diplomats. The young chef, Franz Sacher prepared the specific type of chocolate cake, or torte as the Austrians call it in 1832. Sachertorte remains one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties.

Chateaubriand

One of the most famous meat dishes in the world, not just in French cuisine. Cooked with a thick cut from the tenderloin fillet, the dish is named after a French writer and poet. Francois-Rene, the Viscount of Chateaubriand was a writer, politician, diplomat, and a historian who is remembered for three things: frequent changes in political opinion, love adventures, and the discovery made by his chef. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in France, but also the person responsible for one of the most famous steak dishes.

In its contemporary version, the name refers to any “large steak cut from the thickest part of a fillet of beef”.

Beef Stroganoff

You will notice there are a lot of beef and steak dishes on the list. Beef is one of the most exclusive meat dish. Beef Stroganoff is a prize-winning recipe. The beef originates from Russia, where a chef won a cooking competition in 1890s in St. Petersburg. The chef made the recipe for the Russian diplomat, Count Pavel Alexandrovich Stroganov. He was member of one of the Russia’s grandest noble families. The recipe is a combination of beef, mushrooms, and sour cream.

Beef Wellington

British people have their own version of a famous beef dish. Their national beef dish is Beef Wellington, named after the national hero who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. Arthur Wellesley made the first dish for the Duke of Wellington. The dish is a combination of beef, mushrooms, truffles, pate cooked in pastry, and Madeira wine.

Caesar Salad

This is arguably one of the most famous salad dishes served anywhere in the world. And no, it is not named after Julius Caesar or the Caesar’s Palace hotel in Las Vegas. The inventor of the salad is called Caesar Cardini. He owned an Italian restaurant in Tijuana Mexico. In the 1920, he and his brother invented a salad dish consisting of romaine lettuce, coddled egg, lemon juice, grated Parmesan cheese, anchovies, garlic-flavored croutons tossed with a garlic vinaigrette flavored with Worcestershire sauce. In the beginning, the salad was called Aviator’s Salad. However, Cardini decided to name it after himself later on.

Waldorf Salad

Waldorf is right up there in popularity with Caesar salad. This dish originates from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. The manager of the hotel, Oscar Tschirky, created the salad in 1896. His original recipe contained apples, celery, and mayonnaise. Later on, the dish was enriched with chopped walnuts.

Eggs Benedict

The legend says that the famous breakfast was created at the Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City. After complaints that the menu never changed, the chef prepared something different. Two regulars at the restaurant, Mr. and Mrs. LeGrand Benedict asked the chef for something new for breakfast. He served them eggs on ham served on a muffin and covered in Hollandaise sauce.
