Benedict Arnold’s treason is considered one of the worst treasons in American and world history. He was a general during the American Revolutionary War. He fought heroically for the American Continental Army, and then defected to the enemy in 1780.
On September 21st in 1780, Arnold was found and exposed of treason. He planned to meet with British Major John Andre to discuss handing over West Point to the British in exchange for money and a prestigious position in the British army.
Arnold survived his treason, and died in January 1801 as his health began to decline. He died at the age of 60.
And while his name is popular, no, eggs Benedict are not named after him. Yes, some speculate that because eggs benedict uses Canadian bacon and English muffins, which is traitorous dish for Americans.
This documentary explains how and why Benedict did what he did.
