‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ aims to expose the truth behind the first moon landing.
This film is meant to entertain as well as enlighten the viewers. To this end, it features an interview with Stanley Kubrick’s widow, who claims that Kubrick and other Hollywood producers were recruited to help the U.S. government win popular support so that money from the public fund could be used to finance the space programs.
Kubrick’s 2001: a Space Odyssey (1968) had inspired a lot of people hence he was asked by the then President Nixon to ensure that no promotional opportunities were missed given that it apparently seemed very difficult to transmit live pictures from the first moon landing. Kubrick was provided a special NASA lens to shoot Barry Lyndon.
This film deeply investigates this entire affair and illustrates how images could be manipulated and blended with facts, fiction and hypothesis to create a master piece of hoax. It further shows how archival footage, false documents, real interviews taken out of context or transformed through voice-over or dubbing, staged interviews, as well as, interviews with astronauts like Buzz Aldrin and others were used to create the video of the first moon landing.
