Carthage is one of the most glorious historic cities. The city rose to an empire, and then was wiped off existence by the Romans. But it is worth noting that Carthage, and their leader Hannibal was one of the rare cities that manage to hurt the Romans.
Founded by Phoenician colonists, Carthage is located in present-day Tunisia. It became a major power in the Mediterranean, resulting in a rivalry with Rome and Syracuse. What followed was a war with respective invasions of each other’s homeland.
Hannibal managed to get almost as close to Rome, and had the government of Carthage sent him any reinforcement, he could have taken it. But that didn’t happen, and they lost the Second Punic War.
After the Third Punic War, Carthage was completely destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC. Romans went from house to house, capturing, raping, and enslaving the people before setting the city ablaze.
